Hawks score dramatic victory over rival Mustangs

The Nipawin Hawks had a dramatic victory over their rival Melfort Mustangs last week.

Nipawin came back from a late 1-0 deficit to defeat their rival Mustangs 2-1 in overtime in Melfort on Friday, Nov. 18. The loss extended Melfort’s losing streak to four straight.

Melfort led 1-0 after the first and second periods. Finley Radloff tied the game at 18:51 of regulation to send the game to overtime and Eric Hoiness scored the overtime winner just over two minutes into overtime for the Hawks win. Austin Shepherd scored the lone goal for the Mustangs.

Gage Roberts made 35 saves for Nipawin; Kason Kobelka made 35 saves for Melfort.
As of Dec. 1 the Hawks are in second place in the UPL Division with a record of 15-6-1-0 with 31 points, four points behind the Flin Flon Bombers, the Mustangs are in third place with a record of 9-10-1-2 with 21 points and the La Ronge Ice Wolves are in fourth place with a record of 6-14-2-1 with 15 points.

The Hawks opened their week with a 6-3 win over the Kindersley Klippers in Kindersley on Wednesday, Nov. 26.

The Hawks led 2-1 after the first period and 4-2 after the second period.

Konnor Watson had a hat trick and Jack Janzen had a pair of goals for Nipawin with Hoiness adding the other Hawks goal.

Cooper Flath, Van Egar and Cobe Perilinger responded for the Klippers.

Robert made 22 saves for Nipawin; Mattias Radke made 37 saves for Kindersley.

The Hawks were in La Ronge to play the Ice Wolves on Tuesday, Dec. 2, results were not available.

The Mustangs snapped their four game losing streak on Teddy Bear Toss Night at the Northern Lights Palace with a 6-2 win over the Warman Wolverines on Saturday, Nov. 29.

The game was tied 1-1 after the first period and the Mustangs led 3-1 after the second period.

Bo Eisner scored the Teddy Bear Toss goal in the first period on the power play. Danton Cox, Jack McHarg, Kaleb Binner and Reis Nyland and Shepherd scored the other Mustangs’ goals.

Cox scored on a penalty shot in the second period.

Karson Kerbes and Kanyan Unger responded for the Wolverines.

Kobelka made 25 saves for Melfort; Taye Timmerman made 27 saves for Warman.

Melfort ran their losing streak to three straight with a 4-2 loss to the Weyburn Red Wings in Melfort on Wednesday, Nov. 26.

The Red Wings led 2-0 after the first period and 2-1 after the second period.

Binner and Zayden Sadlemyer scored for Melfort.

Roan Burgess, Lucas Schmid, Callas Pierce and Josh Sale responded for Weyburn.

Mulawka made 12 saves in just over 17 minutes for Melfort before he was replaced by Kason Kobelka who made 10 saves. Preston Patenaude made 33 saves for the Red Wings.

The Ice Wolves closed their week with a 2-1 win over the Weyburn Red Wings in Air Ronge on Saturday, Nov. 29.

La Ronge led 1-0 after the first and second periods. Evan Cook and Jacob Morrison scored for the Ice Wolves. Burgess scored the lone goal for Weyburn.

Graham Brown made 38 saves for La Ronge; Patenaude made 20 saves for Weyburn.

The Ice Wolves opened their week with a 5-0 loss to the Weyburn Red Wings in Air Ronge on Friday, Nov. 28. Nate Stevens stopped all 20 shots he faced to record the Red Wings shutout.

The Red Wings led 3-0 after the first period and 5-0 after the second period. Josh Karman, Ryder Rommelaare, Aiden Mohan, Burgess and Slae scored for the Red Wings.

Brown made 38 saves for La Ronge.

The Hawks and Flin Flon Bombers have a home-and-home this weekend, the teams meet in Nipawin on Friday, Dec. 5 and in Flin Flon on Saturday, Dec. 6.

The Melville Millionaires and Mustangs have a home-and-home this weekend, the teams meet in Melfort on Friday, Dec. 5 and in Melville on Saturday, Dec. 6.

The Ice Wolves are in Warman to play the Wolverines on Friday, Dec. 5 and in Humboldt to play the Broncos on Saturday, Dec. 6.
