Former Prince Albert Raiders defenceman Josh Morrissey is among several players with Saskatchewan connections who were named to Canada’s 2026 Olympic Men’s Hockey Team on Wednesday.
Morrissey joins former Moose Jaw Warrior and current Tampa Bay lightning forward Brayden Point on the list of Team Canada players who spent time with a Saskatchewan-based WHL team.
Los Angeles Kings goaltender Darcy Kuemper of Saskatoon is the only Saskatchewan born player on the roster. Regina’s Ryan Getzlaff is listed as a player relations advisor on the squad.
Morrissey spent four seasons with the Raiders, starting in 2010-11 and ending in 2013-14. He scored 53 goals and added 105 assists in 202 games.
“We are excited to unveil the 25 athletes who have earned the opportunity to wear the Maple Leaf at the 2026 Olympics, as we believe we have assembled a highly skilled and deep roster that can compete for a gold medal as part of Team Canada in Italy,” Team Canada GM Doug Armstrong said. “It was a long and difficult process to finalize our roster, and I am proud of the tireless effort our management group has put in to select our team.
“We know our entire group is excited and grateful for the opportunity to represent our country, and we look forward to making all Canadians proud and hearing our fans cheer us on as we look to bring a gold medal back to Canada.”
Sidney Crosby and Drew Doughty were the only players named to the roster who represented Canada at a previous Winter Games. Both were members of the teams that won gold in 2010 and 2014. The NHL did not send players to the 2018 or 2022 Winter Olympics.
Nineteen players named to the team also suited up for Canada at the Four Nations Face-Off in February 2025.
“I am honoured to be selected to Canada’s men’s hockey team together with so many great players and people, and I am excited to again have the opportunity to represent Canada in February and compete for a gold medal,” Crosby said in a press release. “We know how much pride comes with wearing the Maple Leaf, and our team understands the passion that comes with Olympic hockey. We are grateful for the opportunity to compete with Team Canada at the Olympics.”
Men’s hockey at Milano Cortina 2026 will take place Feb. 11-22, 2026 (Day 5-16), with games taking place at both the Milano Rho Ice Hockey Arena and Milano Santagiulia Ice Hockey Arena. Canada will open the tournament against Czechia on Feb. 12.
