After a successful spell with the Prince Albert Celtics, Jhoan Sanchez is ready for the next level.
The St. Mary High School graduate is the lone player from Prince Albert on the University of Saskatchewan men’s soccer team roster. Sanchez said he’s eager for a new start with a new program.
“I’m excited,” said Sanchez. “It’s the first year and (I’m) hearing good things. I’m excited to play. I’m just thankful to be here.”
Sanchez is in his first year studying Arts and Science at the University of Saskatchewan. He hopes to eventually graduate from the school’s nursing program.
On the soccer pitch, he’s looking to establish himself on a team that struggled last season, finishing 3-10-1 and finishing tied for last in Canada West’s Prairie Division.
So far, Sanchez said he’s impressed with what he’s seen in camp.
“I just enjoyed (being) part of the team, (and) to be in this program,” he said. “The coaches are amazing. The trainers, the teammates, everything’s good.”
The Huskies have had a strong start to the pre-season, with a 2-0 win over the UNBC Timberwolves (2-0), and a win and a loss to the SAIT Trojans.
They open their regular season at home on Friday, Aug. 29 against the Mount Royal Cougars. Sanchez said he’s confident the Huskies will have a strong season if they stay motivated.
“Just be hungry to win,” he said. “Just more motivation, keep practicing every day. We’re doing well right now, so keep motivated and follow the instructions.”
Sanchez and his family move to Canada from Colombia three years ago. After moving to Prince Albert he finished his schooling at St. Mary and played with the Prince Albert Celtics.
“It was fun,” Sanchez said when asked about his time with the Celtics program. “I made my first friends there. We used to travel to Saskatoon to play tournaments (and) provincials. Good friends and good people there. (It was a) good experience.”
The Huskies open their season against the Mount Royal Cougars are Friday at Griffiths Stadium in Saskatoon. Start time is 7 p.m.
That game is the first of two on the Labour Day Long Weekend. The Huskies also host the Calgary Dinos at Griffiths Stadium on Sunday. Start time is 12 p.m.
