Eighth person charged in Tiki Laverdiere’s death

An eighth person has been charged in relation to the homicide of Tiki Brook-Lyn Laverdiere.

The Saskatchewan RCMP Major Crimes Unit North has arrested 55-year-old Mavis Quinn Takakenew of North Battleford. She has been charged with Accessory after the fact to Murder.

Takakenew is scheduled to make her first court appearance in North Battleford Provincial Court on Friday at 9:30 am.

The RCMP is still working to locate Nikita Cook, 31, of the Onion Lake Cree Nation, in relation to the investigation. Cook has been charged with first-degree murder and kidnapping. She is currently wanted on a Canada-wide arrest warrant for the charges relating to Laverdiere’s death.

RCMP warns that Cook should not be approached.

Tiki Laverdiere, 25, travelled from Edmonton to North Battleford to attend the funeral of her friend, Tristen Cook-Buckle, on April 27th. She had expressed wishes to return home to Alberta, but was last heard from by her family on May 1st. Her remains were found outside the city of North Battleford on July 11th, police concluded that her death was the result of foul play.

Five other women — Soaring Eagle Whitstone, 33, Shayla Orthner, 27, Danita Thomas, 32, and Nicole Cook, 36 — have been charged with first-degree murder, kidnapping, improperly interfering with a human body and vehicle theft.

Nicole Cook is Tristen Cook-Buckle’s mother.

Two men — Jesse Sangster, 23, and Brent Checkosis, 18, are accused of accessory after the fact to murder and theft of a motor vehicle. Checkosis is also charged with improperly interfering with a human body.
