This year’s Culture Days in Prince Albert is full of events for the community to dive into diversity without hopping on a plane.
And it doesn’t come with the price tag either because Culture Days is free.
From the famous Tapestrama festival to some brand new activities, Culture Days is here to satisfy the city’s arts and culture craze.
The three day movement is celebrated nationally to embrace the circle of cultures Canada has to offer.
Coordinator Judy MacLeod Campbell said the events are important for members of the community to try new things.
“The whole idea is to expose and have increased participation in cultural activity,” she said. “(It’s) trying different cultural activities that (people) might then have never thought of or pick up down the road.”
She said Prince Albert stands out for its large arts and culture scene.
“It’s good just to stimulate that awareness to what’s out there and what organizations are out there and what activities that people can partake in,” she added.
Free public transit is provided for Culture Days participants.
MacLeod Campbell said she’s coordinated this with city council and the transportation department for the three years it’s been held in Prince Albert.
Summary of Events
Although Culture Days began in the city in 2016, one event has been around since 1975.
Tapestrama is a two day festival, taking place Saturday and Sunday at Plaza 88 from noon to 9 p.m.
Its name is inspired by the tapestry of different cultures and each of their aspects–such as dancing, music and food–all weaving together.
The festival provides entertainment from a range of cultures, including Russian, Indian, Filipino, Indigenous and Irish.
Kicking off Culture Days is the Cultural Cafe on Friday from 7 to 10 p.m. at the Arts Centre.
There will be a singalong, storytelling and performances by a drum group, considering this year’s national theme is ‘on beat.’
On Saturday, you can tag along on the Urban Art Tour.
It’s taking place at the Gateway Mall from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., where 18 artists will be demonstrating their work.
Some even allow guests to try their art form, according to MacLeod Campbell.
The fourth event, and new to Culture Days, is Bead-In.
Based off of Catherine Blackburn’s New Age Warriors exhibit, the community is encouraged to stop by the Mann Art Gallery on Saturday for a beading and stitching class from local artists.
Blackburn is is also teaching six school classes how to bead on Friday as part of Culture Days.
