Residents north of Prince Albert may notice a large flame early Wednesday morning as SaskEnergy and its subsidiary TransGas carry out scheduled maintenance on a natural gas line.
The controlled flare is scheduled for Wednesday, Sept. 3, between 6:30 and 8:30 a.m. at a block valve site located about 12 kilometers northeast of the city, near the Prince Albert Pulp Mill. SaskEnergy says drivers in the area may see a flame up to 40 feet high as natural gas is safely removed from a section of the pipeline.
Officials emphasize there is no risk to the pubic. The flare is a standard industry practice that reduces the carbon footprint of vented gas by as much as 85 percent. SaskEnergy has notified the Prince Albert Fire Department, which confirmed there will be no disruption to natural gas service in the city.
According to a notice from the City of Prince Albert Fire Department, the activity is planned, and there is no cause for concern.
TransGas will notify Burn Control before and after the operation. The area around the flare will be supervised to ensure safety.
