After a one-year absence, Colin Coben’s name is once again on the Senior Men’s Lobstick championship trophy.
The winner of seven straight championships before his streak was snapped by Glen Erickson last June, the Delisle golfer was a model of consistency during his three rounds at the Waskesiu Golf Course as he shot one-over par for the tournament.
“It’s a good feeling and I’m happy to be back here for sure,” Coben smiled after receiving the championship flight trophy Thursday evening.
“It was three perfect days out here. The golf course is in excellent shape and it’s as good as I’ve ever seen it here at this time of the year.”
After opening the tournament with an even-par round of 70 Tuesday, Coben shot a one-over part 71 on Wednesday and matched his opening round showing Thursday.
“I came to the course on Monday and made eight birdies on my way to shooting 65, and I thought to myself ‘Well that’s pretty good,’” Coben joked.
“My philosophy is to hit the ball, find it and hit it again. We’re just out here trying to have fun. We’re not here to try and win cars or anything like that.”
Coben ended up beating Warren Gnam by five strokes for the title, while Lionel Fauchoux finished in third place and was only a shot back of Gnam.
“I made a birdie on the second hole where I hit the ball straight up the hill and it the pin before going in,” Coben said. “I might have made it if the pin wasn’t there, but it certainly helped me get off to a good start.
“Warren made a bogey on that hole but it was still pretty close out there as he and Lionel were right behind me. My goal was to shoot par golf today, so I was happy to get a birdie on the 17th hole to get back to even.”
Coben is now gearing up for the annual Men’s Lobstick tournament, which gets underway Monday and runs through Saturday.
“This is my eighth time to try and win both tournaments, which is something I don’t think has happened before,” Coben said.
“It’s going to be tough, but it would be fun to have a chance to do it.”
Gary Tuffs took home the Super Senior championship flight by six shots over Blair Sterling, with Jim Scissons finishing in third.
