Canadian U18 curling championships set to draw to the button in Saskatoon

Canada’s curling future will be on display in Saskatoon for the next week at the Nutana Curling Club.

The Canadian under-18 male and female curling championships are both running in Saskatoon, starting Sunday and wrapping up next Saturday, when national champions will be declared.

The host city and Saskatoon high schools will be represented by the Saskatchewan Team 2 girls’ team, consisting of skip Renee Wood from the Bedford Road mixed open A team, vice-skip Edie Jardine from the Holy Cross girls A team, Amelia Whiting from the Centennial mixed open A squad and lead Winnie Morin, along with alternate Amy Fradette and coach Dwayne Yachiw.

The other Saskatchewan team, from the Moose Jaw Curling Centre, consists of sip Kaylee Hogeboom, vice-skip Payton Fisher, second Abby Hogeboom and lead Callista McQueen, along with alternate Kelsey McQueen and coach Barb Owens.

On the male side, Saskatchewan Team 1, out of the Esterhazy Curling Club, includes skip Brandon Weiss, vice-skip Josh Lussier, second Carter Nelson, lead Elijah Chomos and alternate Tyler Derksen, as well as coach Mark Weiss.

Saskatchewan Team 2 is skipped by Dayne Heisler, with vice-skip Blake Montgomery, second, Riley Cushway, lead Laine Burnham and coach Rod Montgomery

Overall, the event is attracting 42 teams — 21 male, 21 female — from across Canada.

On the female side are two teams each from:

— Alberta (Skip Alena Yurko and her North Hill Curling Club/Crestwood Curling Club team from Calgary and Edmonton; Skip Abby Desormeau and her Beaumont Curling Club team from Red Deer)

— British Columbia (Skip Ava Arndt and her team from the Vernon Curling Club and Kamloops Curling Club; Skip Megan Rempel and her team from the Kelowna Curling Club and Penticton Curling Club)

— Manitoba (Skip Caitlyn McPherson and her Gimli Curling Club team; Skip Karys Buchalter and her West St. Paul Curling Club team)

— Newfoundland/Labrador (Skip Cailey Locke and her St. John’s Curling Club team; Skip Kyla Walsh and her St. John’s Curling Club team)

— Nova Scotia (Skip Cassidy Blades and her Halifax Curling Club team; Skip Olivia Gouthro and her Truro Curling Club team)

— Ontario (Skip Katrina Frlan and her Huntley Curling Club squad from Carp; Skip Charlotte Wilson and her Rideau Curling Club team from Ottawa)

— and Quebec (Skip Anais Morissette andher Etcheman Curling Club from Levis, Que.; Skip Summer St. James and her Pointe-Clare Curling Club team).

They’ll be joined by teams from:

— New Brunswick (Skip Kate Gaines, Gage Golf and Curling Club in Oromocto, N.B.)

— Northern Ontario (Skip Claire Dubinsky, Kababeka Falls Curling Club)

— Northwest Territories (Skip Reese Wainman, Inuvik Curling Club)

On the male side are two teams apiece from:
