Every spring, Bob Mooney walks through South Hill Cemetery, checking the tombstones of men who died too young.
“I see young kids that are in this field, 20 years old, 18 years old,” he said. “It’s hard to not have the tears come to my eyes. It’s very emotional. I’m proud of them.”
Mooney is a member of Prince Albert’s ANAVETS, who met to celebrate Decoration Day on Sunday. Their padre, Joanne Beacon, prayed for the dead.
“As a community we tend to fragment,” she said. “We tend to be falling away from the things that held us together in the past, such as faith and patriotism.”
But she found hope in the air, sea and army cadets who came to honour the soldiers. They stood at attention. At the call, they placed flags on row after row of graves.
