On Monday, July 14, Mr Mikes Steakhouse will host its sixth annual charity barbeque in support of the YWCA Prince Albert. The event, known as Grillin’ for the Greater Good, will feature live music, community giveaways, and affordable eats, with all proceeds going toward essential services and a new affordable housing project.
“This started during COVID as a way to safely bring people together,” said David Hambleton, fund development officer at the YWCA. “It’s grown every year, and now it’s become something really special, a fun day that also supports serious needs in our community.”
While the barbecue supports a range of YWCA programs, this year’s focus is on a 20-unit affordable housing complex the organization plans to build. Hambleton said the project is designed to help address Prince Albert’s rising demand for safe and accessible housing.
“Prince Albert is a gateway to the north,” he said. “A lot of people come here from smaller communities to build a life, and the housing crisis affects more people than the census would suggest. Events like this help us push back against that.”
For $10 attendees can enjoy a burger, pop, and chips, a major discount from Mr Mikes’ regular pricing. That’s thanks in part to donations from partners like Lake Country Co-op, who will be supplying drinks again this year.
Davinder Singh, general manager at Mr Mikes, said giving back to the community has always been at the heart of the event.
“We’ve been here over a decade, and we wouldn’t be where we are without the people of Prince Albert,” Singh said. “With one charity, we’re able to support youth, housing, newcomers, a big part of our city.”
Local musicians will perform throughout the afternoon, including the band Mystery Train featuring YWCA CEO Donna Brooks on bass guitar.
“It’s an honour to play for a cause that means so much to me,” Brooks said. “Music brings people together. Whether it’s a barbecue or a festival, it boosts moods and builds connection.”
Brooks hopes the event reminds residents of the power of local support. “When we show up for each other, whether it’s for the YWCA, the SPCA, or anyone else, we build a stronger community.”
The event will run from 11 a.m. to 3.p.m. on July 14 outside the Mr Mikes location in Prince Albert. Live music, giveaways, and a family-friendly atmosphere are all on the menu, along with good food that helps build homes.
