Carlton brings stage production of ‘James and the Giant Peach’ to local grade schools
Last year a group of Grade 11 and 12 students at Carlton Comprehensive High School were given an unusual task: to build a giant peach.
It took about three weeks for the students to construct the 12-foot-tall structure, which now sits in the Carlton drama room fastened to scaffolding and draped in orange canvas. The large mechanical fruit serves as both a setting and a silent character in the school’s upcoming production of James and the Giant Peach.
“We didn’t pre-order costumes, the peach didn’t come as a structure already built, we are literally designing from the floor up,” said David Zulkoskey, Carlton drama teacher and director of the school’s Mad Hatter Theatre Company.
“Costumes, makeup, set, acting, it’s all original.”
