BIRCH HILLS — The Birch Hills Fire Department (BHFD) has released a summary of its recent calls and is reminding drivers about the importance of respecting traffic control at emergency scenes.
On Sept. 10 at 7:20 a.m., firefighters were called to a Ford crash notification on Highway 3 in the RM of Birch Hills. Crews found that a vehicle had struck a deer. No injuries or entrapment were reported. Firefighters provided traffic control until the vehicle was removed. The department noted these crash notifications are triggered by monitoring systems similar to OnStar, which alert provincial dispatch when a vehicle detects a collision.
On Sept. 15 at 7:35 a.m., firefighters responded to a collision at the intersection of Highways 2 and 25, where a vehicle had entered the ditch and struck an embankment. Crews rendered first aid to the driver until EMS and RCMP arrived, and maintained traffic control until the vehicle was removed.
The BHFD said both incidents raised serious safety concerns after multiple drivers ignored traffic control zones. In one case, a driver asked if they were required to stop at fire department stop signs, then drove through regardless.
“This is unacceptable on our roadways and poses a risk to responders, victims and drivers themselves,” the department stated on social media.
