After not being selected in the 2017 Bantam Draft, Prince Albert Mintos goaltender Spencer Welke has inked a deal with a Western Hockey League team.
The 17-year-old from Yorkton, who is in his second season with the Mintos, signed a standard player agreement with the Regina Pats on Thursday.
“We are excited to sign Spencer,” Pats general manager John Paddock said in a prepared statement.
“He is having a great season in Prince Albert and brings depth to the position in our organization.”
Welke, who won a Bantam AA title with the Yorkton Maulers in 2016 when he split time with current Saskatoon Blades netminder Nolan Maier, moved up to the Midget AAA ranks last season.
He had a 15-9-0 record and three shutouts in his rookie campaign, in addition to putting up a 3.19 goals against average and a .900 save percentage.
Heading into a weekend road trip against the Notre Dame Hounds and the Moose Jaw Warriors, Welke has a 5-1 mark with a 2.15 goals against average and a .930 save percentage.
