Update: Charges against Maxwell were later withdrawn.
A local reporter and former radio news anchor has pleaded not guilty to aggravated assault and sexual assault charges.
The case of Nigel Maxwell, who once worked as news director with paNOW.com, was back in court Monday afternoon. Maxwell was arrested in June on charges of sexual assault and aggravated assault in relation to an alleged 2014 incident. He was also charged with obstruction of justice for allegedly giving false information to police.
A court worker confirmed that Maxwell has pleaded not guilty and has chosen to be tried by a judge alone at the Court of Queen’s Bench. But first, his case will go to a preliminary inquiry at the provincial courthouse.
The inquiry, which gives the defence a chance to test Crown evidence and hear testimony from witnesses before trial, is set for November 14.
Maxwell is currently out on bail. At the time of his arrest, he was on leave from his duties at paNOW.com and CKBI for reasons unrelated to the allegations. He had earlier left his position as news director to become a reporter.
None of the allegations against Maxwell have been proven in court.
