Hundreds of Saskatchewan Rivers music students come together for joint concert
With the school year coming to an end, music students from across the Saskatchewan Rivers School Division are coming together for one final bow.
On May 30 hundreds of students from 12 schools will converge on Carlton Comprehensive High School for their annual massed band concert.
The Carlton musicians will be joined by students from Arthur Pechey, Christopher Lake, John Diefenbaker, King George, Kinistino, Princess Margaret, Red Wing, Spruce Home, Vincent Massey and W.J. Berezowski Public Schools.
“It is joyful. The band teachers in our school division are great collaborators, everybody is supportive, they are all passionate about music and proud of their programs and excited for their kids to be part of an event like this,” Diefenbaker music teacher Kathleen Clarke said.
“The energy is palpable. It’s really exciting, especially for the kids who haven’t had a chance to do this before. The beginners are all very excited and maybe a little bit nervous and there’s always a little bit of confusion. It’s a joyful chaos.”
The concert will take place on May 30, but the music teachers from the schools in the division have been in communication since the fall coming up with a set list.
The band classes from the various schools will merge together based on skill level to form larger bands. While the students will be familiar with the music, the venue and additional bandmates will be completely new.
