Grandmothers 4 Grandmothers holds 10th annual Arioso and Friends concert
Ten years ago, local vocal trio Arioso approached the upstart Prince Albert chapter of the Stephen Lewis Foundation’s Grandmothers 4 Grandmothers (G4G) campaign with a proposition: join forces for a charity concert.
That concert soon became an annual tradition and on April 2 at Plaza 88 Arioso — singers Pamela Cochet, Linda Jensen and Eunice Mooney — are holding their 10th concert in support of G4G, with proceeds going towards development work in Africa.
“We went to the grannies and said, ‘We have an idea for a fundraiser…’ and really it was a leap of faith for them to say, ‘Sure, we’ll get behind you,’ but it’s just proven to be such a great partnership and for the grannies it’s been their major fundraiser,” Jensen said.
“I think it’s kind of surprising, it’s hard to believe that it has been that long but it’s an anniversary that we’re kind of proud of that we’ve been able to maintain this over the 10 years and have actually grown it a fair bit.”
For the first eight years the concert was held at the 243-seat St. Mary High School theatre. Jensen said the concert would regularly sell out, so last year G4G relocated to Plaza 88, which fits 500 people.
The move proved to be a success. G4G P.A. chair Bea Fisher said last year’s show was the group’s “biggest fundraiser to date,” filling 457 seats, selling 600 dozen “granny-made” cookies and raising more than $8,000.
