Carlton and St. Mary teams fare well in weekend basketball and curling tournaments
The St. Mary Marauders and Carlton Crusaders had successful weekends on the court and on the ice.
Following a 9-2 loss to Ituna in the ‘A’ final, the St. Mary High School girls curling team rebounded with an 11-9 win over Nipawin in the ‘B’ final to qualify for the 2017 Saskatchewan High Schools Athletic Association (SHSAA) girls curling provincials. They will compete in Moose Jaw on March 10 and 11.
It was a come-from-behind win for St. Mary, who trailed Nipawin 9-4 after six ends. The Marauders managed to score four with the hammer in the seventh and steal three points in the eighth for the win.
“The played a very disciplined game,” coach Jackie Packet said.
“They really recognized where they had to be on offence and when they had to be on defence and they set up the ends accordingly and yet they weren’t shy to go after extra points if those extra points were there.”
